“What the firkin hell is this?” I hear you ask. Well, let me explain…

‘Who the firkin hell is…?’ is a weekly glimpse into the lives of individuals that work (some tirelessly) to bring the Brisbane public the very best in good beer. Some are brewers, some own/work in your favourite bar, some are retailers and some are brewery reps.

Up this week is a young fella who’ll you’ll recognise if you frequent The Mill on Constance Street in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. Ewen Davies has recently stepped into another role too – Ben Frost‘s right hand man at Crafty Ranga. Poor, poor Ewen.

Here he is…

ewen daviesWhat is your day job?

Aside from being a lover of beer, I’m a sales rep for Crafty Ranga and on the weekend I’m behind the stick at The Mill on Constance.

How long have you been doing that for?

Repping for about two weeks now and I’ve been at The Mill for the past six months.

What were you up to before that?

Working random things here and there. Many moons ago I was a ‘cocktail bartender’ or some such.

What is the best part about your job?

Everything. I love the products and enjoy an excuse to wander into random bars and talk to people without seeming like too much of a weirdo ha ha!

What was your ‘epiphany beer’? The beer that made you ‘turn your back on cack’?

I was lucky – growing up in Germany the idea of shitty beer was lost on me although after some time you do get over the everyday Pils, Pils and MORE PILS!! But the small Dusseldorf brewery called Urige made a pretty amazing Alt beer which set me on my path.

Have you ever had a beer that has totally blown you away? If so, what was it?

Not sure. I remember drinking the Thornbridge Jaipur IPA when the crazy and stupidly over-hopped west coast IPAs were big and new, so the idea that an IPA could be beautify balanced with malt and bitterness was very interesting.

What is your preferred style of beer and why?

I’m currently digging Golden IPAs at the moment but if I really want a beer it’s usually an ESB or a Brown Ale of some description.

If I gave you $100 in cash right now with the only proviso being that you had to spend it on beer, what would you indulge in?

As many boxes of XXXX tinnies…fill up the esky and head off to the beach in my budgie smugglers. I’m a simple man.

I have a large hoard of empty beer bottles and another of beer glassware. Do you have any beer-related vices?

Other than drinking large sums of it, not really. I did once have a great collection of glassware but I have no idea where it all is now. Also, I seem to be collecting a good sum of growlers and squealers at the moment but that’s non-intentional.

In your opinion, where’s the best place to grab a decent beer in Brisbane?

There isn’t just one great place in Brisbane now which is awesome! But you will find me at The Gresham on a regular occasion. Otherwise, if you clean your beer lines regularly and stock great beer, I’ll see you there.

What is so good about it there?

The Gresham? Aside from being a cozy place to drink after work (and it’s open ’til 3am) there’s great beer and an impressive selection of whisk(e)y on the back bar… also free peanuts.

Bottles or cans?

Tinnies because no-one likes broken glass in the pool. Bottles serve their purpose too.

What are your hopes for the future of Brisbane’s craft beer industry?

Growth as a community along with growth as an industry. I wouldn’t mind seeing more events all year round celebrating the beers we not only make around the country but beers made locally. Also, I’d love to see some of the gypsy brewers gaining enough momentum to start up their own breweries too.

This isn’t a job interview but where do you see yourself in five years time?

Geez…who knows? Anything! I could be running a brewery or working in a lab gaining a greater understanding of all things beer. I’ll definitely be doing something that will be part of the [beer] industry and will always be looking for things to help it grow.

What would your response be if somebody stopped you in the street and asked you what your favourite beer blog is?

Nothing like a little shameless self promotion eh? I heard that 250 Beers is pretty good…it pops up on my Facebook feed regularly enough.
