“What the firkin hell is this?” I hear you ask. Well, let me explain…
‘Who the firkin hell is…?’ is a weekly glimpse into the lives of individuals that work (some tirelessly) to bring the Brisbane public the very best in good beer. Some are brewers, some own/work in your favourite bar, some are retailers and some are brewery reps.
If you don’t know what a firkin is then the whole beer-related, play-on-words title will be lost on you right?! Fear not – click here for more information on firkins.
This week features the first ever American to appear on 250 Beers…or at least the first ever to face the firkin questions.
Hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico here’s Jim Hollars…
Queensland Craft Beer Ambassador Lion (Little Creatures, White Rabbit and James Squires).
How long have you been doing that for?
Two years now and loving it.
What were you up to before that?
Sales Executive XXXX, Biscuit Salesman, US Marine.
What is the best part about your job?
I like meeting new people and introducing them to craft. I also like the creativity of special events such as beer dinners etc. Recently I did a Wine vs Beer with St Hallet Wines and James Squire. Beer won of course!
What was your ‘epiphany beer’? The beer that made you ‘turn your back on cack’?
I lived in Belgium as an exchange student and loved Chimay and a few other Belgian beers. I was a beer geek at age 16.
Have you ever had a beer that has totally blown you away? If so, what was it?
Stone Brewing’s Sublimely Self Righteous. So many flavours, so little time.
What is your preferred style of beer and why?
I tend to drink with the seasons so I am into the dark beers at the moment.
If I gave you $100 in cash right now with the only proviso being that you had to spend it on beer, what would you indulge in?
Little Creatures’ Seasonal Release “Return of the Dread” – out now for three months. Plug Plug.
I have a large hoard of empty beer bottles and another of beer glassware. Do you have any beer-related vices?
I am a home brewer and love experimenting with different styles. I still haven’t mastered Saisons.
In your opinion, where’s the best place to grab a decent beer in Brisbane?
Brewski, Embassy, The Alliance Hotel, The Charming Squire, Newstead Brewing Co. Way too many to compare!
What is so good about it there?
Great service, beer knowledge, great food.
Bottles or cans?
I am a traditionalist but fell in love with Gordon’s Beer cans from Oscar Blues. I would love to see more craft brands in cans.
What are your hopes for the future of Brisbane’s craft beer industry?
I would like for everyone to come together and convert the 96%! Plus, grow our industry to a sustainable level.
This isn’t a job interview but where do you see yourself in five years time?
Selling beer or managing people selling beer.
What would your response be if somebody stopped you in the street and asked you what your favourite beer blog is?
250 Beers of course!
So, Jim, you were a biscuit salesman before beer? You Arnott pulling my leg are you? Wonder why he ended up selling beer? That’s the way the cookie crumbles I guess.
I’ll get my coat…
Cheers for your time Jim!!
