“What the firkin hell is this?” I hear you ask. Well, let me explain…

‘Who the firkin hell is…?’ is a weekly glimpse into the lives of individuals that work (some tirelessly) to bring the Brisbane public the very best in good beer. Some are brewers, some own/work in your favourite bar, some are retailers and some are brewery reps.

If you don’t know what a firkin is then the whole beer-related, play-on-words title will be lost on you right?! Fear not – click here for more information on firkins.

Up this week is Rocky Reed from Northdown Craft Beer Movement. Rocky’s effervescent character is known throughout Brisbane. If you’re not too familiar with Rocky then here she is…

Rocky ReedWhat is your day job?

Craft beer ambassador and rep for Northdown Craft Beer Movement.

How long have you been doing that for?

Just over 18 months.

What were you up to before that?

Publicist at Channel Nine then stay-at-home mum for a bit before the kids drove me to drink. (Joke! Well, not completely…)

What is the best part about your job?

Being able to say “It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it” and really mean it! (Insert very smug expression here) Really though, the obvious thing (the beer) aside, the people in the industry are fantastic and passionate and you can’t ask for more than that.

What was your ‘epiphany beer’? The beer that made you ‘turn your back on cack’?

Not really one particular beer but a few years back when Craft Wine Store was Festival Cellars, Kieran (from The Scratch – my beer pimp!) worked there and he set me on my craft path to enlightenment with things like Holgate, Red Duck and 3 Ravens and I’ve never looked back.

Have you ever had a beer that has totally blown you away? If so, what was it?

My first Westvleteren! (The Extra 8). Also, the 8 Wired Hopwired will always be dear to my hoppy heart. Most recently I fell in love with the Weihenstephaner Kreuz des Sudens (German for “Southern Cross”) which was a special edition small-batch brewed for Melbourne’s Good Beer Week (a batch was also brewed in Brisbane at Newstead Brewery). That beer experience was enhanced by the fact that I had a glass or two of the Kreuz des Sudens at a dinner with the beer master himself (insert another smug expression)!

What is your preferred style of beer and why?

I’ve been on an IPA bender for most of my craft beer career but I’m a bit partial to a good red ale at the moment and there is also nothing more decadent than a fine Saison, Dubbel or Tripel.

If I gave you $100 in cash right now with the only proviso being that you had to spend it on beer, what would you indulge in?

Something Trappist or Abbey or I’d put it towards my fund (start my fund that is) for a ticket to Belgium for my 40th so I can visit all the Trappist breweries.

I have a large hoard of empty beer bottles and another of beer glassware. Do you have any beer-related vices?

Yes, getting blokes to get their kit off under the ‘guise’ of a beer calendar. All for charity of course!

In your opinion, where’s the best place to grab a decent beer in Brisbane?

Definitely no better place than Jimmy’s on the Mall… they do a cracking XXXX Gold!

What is so good about it there?

….the XXXX Gold….and the Fox Sport.

Bottles or cans?

Are growlers not an option? Or 5 litre easy kegs? Or the odd squealer filled with Bridge Road Bling Bling goodness which I’ve been consuming (straight from the squealer…bugger the Spiegelau IPA glass) as I type this.

What are your hopes for the future of Brisbane’s craft beer industry?

A craft beer island to rival XXXX island with Canadian Club drinkers waiting on us in the tutus of the beer fairies they supposedly extinguished.

This isn’t a job interview but where do you see yourself in five years time?

Hopefully not in Chile drinking chicha.

What would your response be if somebody stopped you in the street and asked you what your favourite beer blog is?

That 250 Beers guy… he’s pretty patient and waited weeks for this shitty half-baked response.

Thanks to Rocky. To show my appreciation, I’m off to go and find her a growler full of chicha
