Who the firkin hell is…Brennan Fielding?

“What the firkin hell is this?” I hear you ask. Well, let me explain…

‘Who the firkin hell is…?’ is a weekly glimpse into the lives of individuals that work (some tirelessly) to bring the Brisbane public the very best in good beer. Some are brewers, some own/work in your favourite bar, some are retailers and some are brewery reps.

If you don’t know what a firkin is then the whole beer-related, play-on-words title will be lost on you right?! Fear not – click here for more information on firkins.

In the firkin hot seat this week is Brennan Fielding from award-winning Burleigh Brewing

Brennan Fielding

What is your day job?

Brewmaster at the Burleigh Brewing Company.

How long have you been doing that for?

Seven years.

What were you up to before that?

Brewing beer for the Oxford Brewing Company in Brisbane and helping set up Moo Brew in Tassie. Prior to moving to Australia I was brewing in Japan, US and Hawaii.

What is the best part about your job?

That’s a tough one! Making tasty beer, tasting said beer, meeting people who like to drink tasty beer, working with people who enjoy being around tasty beer, getting to go around the world to judge tasty beer…basically anything to do with tasty beer!

What was your ‘epiphany beer’? The beer that made you ‘turn your back on cack’?

There’s no single epiphany beer but quite a few…Anchor Steam, Samichlaus…another was the Celebrator, EKU28…I could go on and on.

Have you ever had a beer that has totally blown you away? If so, what was it?

Sublimely Self Righteous Ale, Big Swell, Palate Wrecker and I gotta say (not because marketing tells me I have to but because it’s totally true) Hassle Hop.

What is your preferred style of beer and why?

I love pale ales but really anything that is made well!

If I gave you $100 in cash right now with the only proviso being that you had to spend it on beer, what would you indulge in?

The $100 would probably just about cover my epiphany and mind blown list…one bottle of each, hopefully!

I have a large hoard of empty beer bottles and another of beer glassware. Do you have any beer-related vices?

About five years ago I had to cull my beer glass collection and threw out around 200 glasses. I kept the best of them and now still have about 200. I used to keep beer bottles too but the labels kept fading so I no longer keep any beer bottles around but I miss not having that historical record. Claire (our social media person) keeps telling me I need an Instagram account!

In your opinion, where’s the best place to grab a decent beer in Brisbane?

I gotta represent the Gold Coast here so I’m going to say Pigs and Pints in Burleigh as I can ride there and they’ve got six of our beers on tap plus a great range of others too! But, if I was in Brisbane, I’d probably have to say Scratch Bar in Milton.

What is so good about it there?

Unpretentious and good beer….what more can you ask for?

Bottles or cans?

If it’s good beer I don’t care but if it’s in a bottle then it’s got to be brown glass only!

What are your hopes for the future of Brisbane’s craft beer industry?

More people getting excited by having an actual choice when it comes to beer. Five years ago we had to drink the same beer in every single bar. Now with people being given a real choice then the industry will keep growing nicely.

This isn’t a job interview but where do you see yourself in five years time?

Still working as the Brewmaster for Burleigh Brewing but hopefully with a little more time to surf!

What would your response be if somebody stopped you in the street and asked you what your favourite beer blog is?

Come on. Is this a trick question?!

Cheers Brennan. I really appreciate your time. Thanks also to Claire for sorting.

Next week will feature one half of a bar owning partnership. In fact, he is one half of AC/DC.
