“What the firkin hell is this?” I hear you ask. Well, let me explain…
‘Who the firkin hell is…?’ is a weekly glimpse into the lives of individuals that work (some tirelessly) to bring the Brisbane public the very best in good beer. Some are brewers, some own/work in your favourite bar, some are retailers and some are brewery reps.
If you don’t know what a firkin is then the whole beer-related, play-on-words title will be lost on you right?! Fear not – click here for more information on firkins.
This week features Kieran Ryan from Brisbane’s craft beer bar front-runners, The Scratch. It was announced yesterday by The Urban List that Kieran is the fourth best cocktail maker in Brisbane…despite never having served one!
What is your day job?
I am the Scratch Bar’s resident Beer Hunter. Using highly advanced digital technology based communication devices I scour the beery jungle for new species to hang on my wall… And put in your belly…. I’m kind of like the crocodile hunter, but I have a chair… I also help own and run the bar.
How long have you been doing that for?
Going on 2 years now.
What were you up to before that?
Trying my hand at several things… Looking for the “right” thing to do. I felt like I was getting close while working out of the now defunct Festival Cellars back when it was one of the only independent and crafty bottle-o’s in town.
What is the best part about your job?
The family. It’s definitely a bit of a cliché, but I think we actually might have the best freaking team working here.
What was your ‘epiphany beer’? The beer that made you ‘turn your back on cack’?
It’s a tricky question. Although I do remember a specific teary moment upon sipping my first lambic in Belgium back some 10 years ago, there is still an ocean of bad beer in between. I think – like many, it has been the advent of the hop bomb that has made it hard to go back to bland beers.
Have you ever had a beer that has totally blown you away? If so, what was it?
Sure. On a recent trip to the US I was having beergasms every other day.
What is your preferred style of beer and why?
For a go-to drop – refreshing and spicy. A classic saison, or a hoppy pilsner. Otherwise, a big stout please.
If I gave you $100 in cash right now with the only proviso being that you had to spend it on beer, what would you indulge in?
Does a one way ticket to Beervana count?
I have a large hoard of empty beer bottles and another of beer glassware. Do you have any beer-related vices?
I like to drink nude.
In your opinion, where’s the best place to grab a decent beer in Brisbane?
What is so good about it there?
So much good beer and the place oozes sexy.
Bottles or cans?
Don’t care, just beer.
What are your hopes for the future of Brisbane’s craft beer industry?
That the independent beer community continues to grow and look after each other, and gets all the support it deserves to make a strong, sustained and happy industry.
This isn’t a job interview but where do you see yourself in five years time?
Working behind the bar at Tippler’s.
Cheers to Kieran for his time. If you see him around town drinking naked, go and buy him a beer!

Next week will feature a brewer that brews his beers north of Brisbane.
