“What the firkin hell is this?” I hear you ask. Well, let me explain…

‘Who the firkin hell is…?’ is a weekly glimpse into the lives of individuals that work (some tirelessly) to bring the Brisbane public the very best in good beer. Some are brewers, some own/work in your favourite bar, some are retailers and some are brewery reps.

Since last week’s feature it occurred to me that not everybody knows what the firk a firkin is. Silly me. If you don’t know what one is then the whole beer-related, play-on-words title is lost on you right? Fear not – click here for more information on firkins.

Without further ado this week’s instalment features Wade Curtis from 4 Hearts Brewing

Wade Curtis

What is your day job?

Marketing and Communications Manager for Ipswich City Council.

How long have you been doing that for?

18 months.

What were you up to before that?

Brand Marketing Manager for Virgin Australia Airlines.

What is the best part about your job?

I love marketing so getting to work on lots of new ideas is great.

What was your ‘epiphany beer’? The beer that made you ‘turn your back on cack’?

Hoegaarden in the UK and then in Belgium.

Have you ever had a beer that has totally blown you away? If so, what was it?

Orval – the flavours in it are so unique. I never knew you could make a beer that tasted so different…but in a good way.

What is your preferred style of beer and why?

That’s like asking which one of your kids you like the most! I have a passion for lower alcohol beers around 3%.

If I gave you $100 in cash right now with the only proviso being that you had to spend it on beer, what would you indulge in?

Clout Stout by Nail and I would use the change to buy some blue cheese and chocolate!

I have a large hoard of empty beer bottles and another of beer glassware. Do you have any beer-related vices?

Just drinking it….but I do have 22 dozen tallies in my shed from when I was bottling homebrew beers.

In your opinion, where’s the best place to grab a decent beer in Brisbane?

So many options right now. I’m not sure but it has to be outside/in a beer garden. Maybe a tie between Tippler’s Tap and The Scratch.

What is so good about it there?

Relaxed and not pretentious.

Bottles or cans?

Bottles.

What are your hopes for the future of Brisbane’s craft beer industry?

More bars, more breweries and less XXXX!

This isn’t a job interview but where do you see yourself in five years time?

Running 4 Hearts Brewing full-time maybe with a brew pub and sending my beers around the country.

What would your response be if somebody stopped you in the street and asked you what your favourite beer blog is?

250 Beers of course!

Thanks for taking the time to participate Wade.

Keep an eye out for Wade’s flavoursome, lower alcohol beers around Brisbane, Ipswich and beyond!

Next week we’ll hear things from the perspective of a brewery representative…
