“What the firkin hell is this?” I hear you ask. Well, let me explain…
‘Who the firkin hell is…?’ is a new, weekly glimpse into the lives of individuals that work (some tirelessly) to bring the Brisbane public the very best in good beer. Some are brewers, some own/work in your favourite bar, some are retailers and some are brewery reps.
This week’s instalment features Carl Rhodes from Tippler’s Tap…
What is your day job?
Manager at Tippler’s Tap.
How long have you been doing that for?
Roughly 18 months.
What were you up to before that?
Working in the good beer industry.
What is the best part about your job?
There are many best parts of my job, I work with awesome people, I meet awesome people, I drink awesome beer.
What was your ‘epiphany beer’? The beer that made you ‘turn your back on cack’?
I can’t remember the exact beer. Around 15 years ago I spent 2 years in England working at a Fullers pub in Oxford, that was my intro to good beer, I recall Fuller’s ESB being my favourite.
Have you ever had a beer that has totally blown you away? If so, what was it?
Many beers have blown me away. Given what I do for a living, I get to drink a lot of good beer. A few that come to mind are War & Peat from Bacchus, Bumaye from 8 Wired & Brown Town from Liberty & Renaissance.
What is your preferred style of beer and why?
Imperial Stout, because I like how it tastes. I also like big hoppy Brown Ales.
If I gave you $100 in cash right now with the only proviso being that you had to spend it on beer, what would you indulge in?
Imperial Stouts and big hoppy Brown Ales I guess.
I have a large hoard of empty beer bottles and another of beer glassware. Do you have any beer-related vices?
No, I just like to drink beer.
In your opinion, where’s the best place to grab a decent beer in Brisbane?
I don’t feel like there’s a best place, there’s a bunch of places that are my favourites for different reasons. My top 4 bars are Scratch, Archive, Green Beacon & Tippler’s. Archive & Wine Emporium are my picks for retail.
What is so good about it there?
Good beer & good people.
Bottles or cans?
What are your hopes for the future of Brisbane’s craft beer industry?
I hope to see growth in Brisbane’s craft community. I hope the good people that are currently involved stay involved and I hope venues, retailers, wholesalers & brewers continue to work together as a team.
This isn’t a job interview but where do you see yourself in five years time?
My goal is to be living sustainably on a few acres out of town with my family. The idea is to be as self sufficient as possible, it’ll take time to be completely self sufficient, in 5 years time I see myself being well on my way.
What would your response be if somebody stopped you in the street and asked you what your favourite beer blog is?
I’d be quite surprised if that happened.
Cheers for taking part Carl.
Who’ll be in the firkin hot-seat next week…? I’ll give you a small clue: he’s a brewer. Stay tuned!
