James Squire Brewhouse anyone…?

October 3, 2013 by 250 Beers

It’s no secret – in fact, it is widespread gossip in Brisbane – that the betting man’s money is on Lion Nathan’s Malt Shovel Brewery brand, James Squire, to win the contract for the earmarked micro-brewery site on Grey Street, South Bank…a James Squire Brewhouse if you will.

It was possibly only a matter of time before it happened here as there are JS Brewhouse’s in most Australian capital cities. Why wouldn’t they want to build one here where beer is booming?

I just hope they never forsake flavour.

Maybe Fortitude? Though my money would be on JS

I’ve visited the JS Brewhouse in Melbourne. They had the Highwayman (a thrice hopped red ale) and the Blackmail (Black Rye IPA) on tap, both of which were pretty good. So they can do some craftier stuff in the Brewhouse’s, not just the regular lineup that tends to make beer geeks sigh with dissapointment. While it’d be awesome to see a local team in there instead, getting a JS may not be a such a terrible thing.

I quite enjoy the Melbourne JS Brewhouse (Portland Hotel) on the odd occasion too. The food is good and the “in-house” beers are always worth tasting. Ultimately, it depends on who the brewer is at the time – whether they are a passionate brewer or just a Lion ring-in. And then sometimes they’ll go months and months without brewing on-site or bring in “in-house” beers, so there’s not much on offer.

I went to the one in Perth earlier this year, and did not like it at all. Probably because their only 2 in-house beers were both boring wheat beers. It was also much newer and just felt more soulessly commercial in design and output.

Nonetheless, if it opens up a little more beer diversity, then it’s a good thing. Let’s just hope people that are really interested in good beer are involved.

My thoughts are the same – if the right people are behind the scenes then it’ll be a nice addition….particularly for those that hop off of a train at South Brisbane station and walk to Archive. It’ll be a good distraction before settling in at Archive for the afternoon/evening.
