“What is this?” I hear you ask. Well, on the first Friday of every month beer bloggers from around the world post to their blogs about a pre-determined subject. This is called The Session (or Beer Blogging Friday) and each month a different blogger hosts it. This month it’s Glen’s turn at Beer Is Your Friend. His chosen subject is ‘compulsion’.
I have no doubt that many posts this month will be about the compulsion to buy beer, to buy a favourite beer, to buy limited edition beer, to buy never-before-seen beer etc.
I can’t hide the fact that I do have a compulsion to go and buy the newest beery arrival in town however, I have chosen to post about my compulsion to write about beer. You see, up until a few years ago good beer was hard to come by in these parts of Queensland, Australia (Brisbane to be precise). In fact, up until a few years ago I had no idea that good beer was hard to come by in Brisbane. I was into macro-brewed lagers and with years of experience behind me of doing much the same in England I was very much at home glugging shit beer in the warmth and tropical climate of Bris Vegas.
In 2010 I saw the light. Twice.
The first time was when somebody handed me a bottle of craft beer (thank you Keith). I can actually pinpoint the beer exactly – it was a bottle of Pepperjack Ale (4.7%) from Saltram Estate. Almost in an instant I was converted to being a craft beer drinker.
Back then, the words ‘craft’ and ‘beer’ were swear words (or toilet words as my three-year old would say) in Brisbane. You’d only utter those words if you were in the company of other craft beer drinkers.
The other life changing incident in 2010 came when I decided to pick up my pen again and re-ignite my desire to write…to embrace beer and write about it. Over time, a beer blog was born.
As the months roll on I find myself compelled to write more about beer – specifically about beer in Brisbane and Queensland. I have my face stuck into my iPad at every given opportunity – writing drafts of blog posts during the hour-long train journey into work that people might one day find interesting.
My Brisbane-based beer blog is a teeny-weeny blip in the continued and upward craft beer movement in this city and nation of beer drinkers; a nation that boasts a disgusting 97% sales figure of mass-produced beers by international conglomerates.
I have this faint hope that everybody that stumbles upon my blog will do themselves a favour and go and try a decent craft beer. Jeez, I’m not setting out to convert everybody. I’m not a preacher – more of a proud convert – but if my compulsion to write about good beer converts just one drinker of shitty beer in Brisbane then I’ll be happy.
Nearly three years after sipping that Pepperjack I’ve amounted a unique beer tally of nearly 500 different beers. I intend on sticking with my compulsion and will keep writing about the next 500 and then the next and the next…
