Beer of Origin (BoO) 2013: Game 1

Firstly, I should explain that the concept of Beer of Origin (BoO) only sprang to mind yesterday which was game day of the first of this years State of Origin matches. It left me with no time at all to source some decent beers to place head to head for BoO.

Tooheys New and XXXX Gold aren’t everybody’s beer of choice. They are regarded poorly in some quarters. However, sales of these two Lion Nathan beers are massive in Australia and this fact can’t be ignored. It is for this reason that I was happy to settle on New and Gold for round one of BoO. Plus, has anybody else actually put these two head to head before? Not that I could find.

I want to keep BoO as fair as possible so I opted for 330ml cans as opposed to bottles. Even though both beers are available in 330ml bottles, a Tooheys New stands slightly taller than a XXXX Gold and I wasn’t going to have any height advantage ruining the event. Both spent exactly the same amount of time on the same shelf in my beer fridge so they were both served at exactly the same temperature.

Both beers poured very cleanly and both provided a decent head although the XXXX Gold head was slightly better.

Into the nitty-gritty of aromas, tastes and lingering aftertastes now…

I struggled and I knew I would. I knew at the back of my mind that the first round of BoO was going to boil down to which shit beer was marginally better than the other shit beer.

There were no notable aromas other than the whiff of mass-produced nothingness – a slight smell of a huge factory in there somewhere maybe?

My palate is nowhere near as astute as a true pro but after spending recent years exposing my taste buds to craft beer, I was shocked at just how bad these two macro brewed beers are. Why on earth do people drink this stuff and expose their bodies to such wank?

There wasn’t much in taste to split the two. Both the Gold and the New were extremely lacking in taste. Halfway through the New I tasted cardboard and towards the end of the Gold I got a distinct taste of balsa wood in my mouth.

If somebody had a gun against my head and demanded that I picked a winner or they’d pull the trigger then I’d be dead. How embarrassing for the coroner to find not only XXXX Gold in my system but Tooheys New as well. My family would never live it down.

Unlike the first game of State of Origin where NSW drew first blood, round one of the 2013 BoO was a draw.

Round two will be on June 26th.

Would a XXXX Bitter have faired any better? Not sure, but at least it would have beer fairer in terms of alcohol content! Can’t wait for Game II of BoO 2013. Go Queensland! 😉

  2. […] the lacklustre Game 1 of Beer of Origin (BoO) where I declared the game a draw due to both state representatives performing poorly, this round proved a little bit more interesting […]

  3. […] BoO 1 was declared a draw and BoO 2 was won by Queensland. […]
