The urban myth that BWS missed Brisbane in its entirety with its Monteith’s IPA release has been blown open!
Myth-buster, fellow Brisbanite and fellow twitterererer, Andrew Holden, managed to purchase a bottle yesterday in Jindalee, 12kms south west of Brisbane’s CBD. The only bottle on the shelf apparently. He’s kindly agreed to let me publish his photographic evidence:
This backs evidence from Hugh Jass (c’mon Hugh, think of a better name next time) who stated that he saw ‘a’ bottle on the shelf at his local BWS in Tingalpa and also Geoff Linley who spotted ‘one’ in Carina. Did you note the singular not the plural on all three sightings? Did you also notice that all three stores were south of the Brisbane river? Still no luck north of Brissie.
Some will claim that it was marketing genius to have ran an attractive full-page nationwide ad in all major newspapers; to have enticed people into their stores, not find Monteith’s IPA and have purchased something else instead. ‘Cha-ching!’ goes their till right? Maybe. However, I think any mislead takings would have been down to luck rather than a devious marketing ploy. I bet there weren’t hundreds of beer lovers rushing into their local BWS over the past week. Just me! Me – on a small mission to prove the ineptitude of a large chain of bottle shops run by Woolies.
On Sunday night, I lodged a semi-serious complaint based upon fact via BWS’s website. I mentioned the seven north-side stores that pleaded ignorance. An automated email assured me of a response within 24 hours.
Monday night came and went.
On Tuesday night, I complained that my complaint had been ignored.
Today, Wednesday 27th February – the day after the originally advertised ‘2 x 500ml for $10’ deal expired – I received a response. It came from a member of the Woolworth’s Beer Team. Yes, there is an actual department within Woolies called The Beer Team.
They have offered me 4 x complimentary 500ml bottles of the IPA as an apology. There is no sign of an explanation though.
My like of Monteith’s is nowhere near as strong as my love of a decent IPA. I used to look at Monteith’s quite favourably until I tried their Pilsner, Pale Ale and Summer Ale over the festive period. I can’t hide the fact that they were all pretty bad!
I’ll let you know how I go with it. Maybe.
